The Effects of Childhood Stress in Adulthood


Apparently children seem happy and carefree, but they also have worries and problems that can be of varying degrees. Children often cope with the low grade stress however, excessive stress is harmful and sometimes has serious consequences in the adulthood.

Causes of early life stress

1. Lack of parental care: Parents are too busy due to social and financial responsibilities and cannot spend quality time with their children due to the fact they feel lonely and helpless.

2. Stress related to exam and studies: There is a lot of stress related to studies in this era, students are always compared to each other and pushed into the race of grades and marks. Concept based and innovative thinking is deficient which leads to lack of innovation and employment opportunities and ultimately depressive behavior.

3. Trauma: Early life trauma such as head injury, accidents and the death of a loved one can have negative mental health effects

4. Abusive family environment: Parents and other relatives unnecessarily scold or hit the child or do it over minor issues. Instead to listening to them always put allegations which leads to low self-esteem.

5. Lack of physical activity: Children are too busy at school and spend a lot of time on the screen, which leads to a sedentary lifestyle.

6. Separation between parents: Parents are always busy fighting and neglect the emotional needs of their children, which causes serious stress to their children. In the event of separation, they will remain with one of the parents, which will leave indelible scars.

7. Sexual abuse: Childhood sexual harassment and abuse can be very harmful later in life.

Consequences of early life stress during adulthood

·        Low self esteem

·        Suicidal behavior

·        Obesity
