Excessive screen time is damaging for health and it leads to
obesity, sleep disturbance, cognitive decline, muscle pain and diminished
socializing abilities (details of negative health consequences are described here).
Due to the devastating effects of excessive screen usage, it
is very important to limit the screen time for both children and adults. Some of
the useful tips to reduce screen time are given below.
Use technology to monitor your screen time
Although it is essential to use screen for work however, you can
add limit by setting alarms and reminders related to screen usage. Your device
will notify that you have spent this much time on the screen and now it’s time
to get a break. In this way, you can sit back and relax for certain period of
time. Take at least 30 minutes break and then return to work. This is highly advisable
if you are using screen for leisure.
Avoid eating during screen time
If you are eating during screen time you will probably eat
more and tend to spend more time in front of screen. Therefore, it is a better
practice to designate a separate time and place for eating.
Screen free zones
It is important to make a screen free zone in your house where all family members can sit and talk for a while.
Encourage your children to communicate their needs during
this time and try to properly address their financial and emotional needs. In this
way, family connection would be stronger and you will be able to know the
problems of each other.
Engage your children in healthy activities
The best way to reduce screen time for children is to engage
them in healthy indoor and outdoor activities. Spend time with your children
and involve them in age appropriate activities. These activities could be
chosen according to the child’s interest and may include sports, running, cycling, reading etc.
This habit will release the stress and children will
be happier than before!
