Parenting Style

Parenting style involves different strategies and methods used by the parents to raise their children. Parenting style has huge impact on the children’s physical and mental wellbeing, social life, education, emotional regulation and productivity. Early life attachment, independence and defining boundaries help to raise happy, confident and self-reliant kids. Parents have their own ideas and beliefs related to parenting depending upon social and cultural values, therefore, different parenting styles exist across the world. Diana Baumrind, a child psychologist mainly categorize the parenting style into four different types;

    Authoritarian Parenting

    Authoritative Parenting

    Permissive Parenting

    Uninvolved Parenting

Each parenting style has its own unique characteristics that will help you to understand which type of parent are you.

Authoritarian Parenting (Disciplinarian)

This form of parenting;

    Is very demanding.

    Involves one-way communication (parent to child).

    Imposes strict rules on the children.

    Does not care about behavioral and emotional needs of children.

Parents expect much from the children and always try to drive them in their own way. This parenting style focuses on the obedience rather than opinion! For example, children should always get good grades in school and they would be physically or verbally abused if failed to do so.

Authoritarian parents do not satisfy less than their standard and failure to meet their standard make them angry and aggressive

Authoritative Parenting (Democratic)

These parents;

    Are more responsive and less demanding.

    Set clear rules for their children and explain reasons for the rules while also allow

    flexibility.

    Do not punish children for natural consequences (like child forgot his lunch box at

    school).

    Often communicate the needs of their children.

    Understand the feelings and emotions of their children.

Authoritative parents try to create a positive environment at home and utilize their energy and time to avoid the behavioral problems of their kids. Moreover, authoritative parenting allows the children to be independent and resolve their own problems.

Permissive Parenting (Indulgent)

In permissive parenting;

    Children learn on their own without parent’s interference.

    Parents define rules but hardly enforce the rules.

    Provide freedom to children in their decisions.

    Parents act as friends and often communicate with their children.

    Do not impose their decisions on the children.

Permissive parents usually put less effort in raising kids and accept the decision of their children even if these decisions are wrong and have negative consequences.

Uninvolved Parenting (Neglectful)

These parents;

    Do not take much interest in their children’s matter (where are the kids, what are they doing).

    Do not even ask about their studies.

    Remain busy in their own affairs and spend less time with children.

Uninvolved parents remain distant from their children and do not provide enough guidance. These parents are lenient, let the children decide for themselves and do not consume their energy in resolving their issues.

Conclusions

Different parenting styles exist and there is no hard and fast rule regarding parenting and many parents fall into more than one categories. Similarly, there is no concept of perfect parenting so do not feel guilty if you are switching between different styles. Every style has its own pros and cons that will be discussed further, so keep reading to choose the most effective parenting style.

Keep smiling and have a good day!
